There are several pathways to access CEDEN data, as described below.

CEDEN Query Tool

  • The CEDEN query allows users to select the data category and filter on a variety of fields.
  • The dynamic filters mean that selections alter the options of subsequent fields.
    • For example, if a user selects a specific Program, the analytes listed in the analyte filter will only be those that have associated results as part of that program.
  • Results flagged with a reject code are not available through the Query Tool.

California Open Data Portal

  • The Open Data Portal provides access to data from a variety of state agencies in a machine-readable format.
    • Once on the site, users can search using the word CEDEN and data sets containing every CEDEN data category (chemistry, tissue, toxicity, etc.) will be returned.
    • Each dataset contains one or more flat files that are similar to the exports from the CEDEN Query Tool and also include two additional fields that convey a level of data quality.
    • This pathway does not provide an interface for filtering; however, the site does provide APIs to deliver refreshed data, though larger datasets may have problems.
    • A stations file is also available that can be linked to any of the data category files.
  • Toxicity data provided on the Open Data Portal may be easier for many users to use. While there is a file that is similar to what is exported from the Query Tool, there are also files that provide the summary results separated from the replicate results and are exported in a format that matches the data upload form.
  • Results flagged with a reject code and field replicates are not available through the Open Data Portal datasets.
  • CEDEN Augmentation Data – This dataset on the State's Open Data Portal is comprised of field and chemistry data submitted to CEDEN via the Water Boards Data Center since 2020. These data were not loaded to the database, so they are not available through the Query Tool. Results flagged with a reject code and field replicates are not available in this dataset.
